Healthy Snacks For Mission Trips

Before indulging you with my choices of healthy snack options, allow me first to make a statement. If it is in your heart to go on a mission trip remember to travel with a willing heart & palate. While on a mission you may encounter new cultures who enjoy different varieties of food. In these countries, people are overwhelmed with joy that a team is visiting their beloved home. Most have little to offer to express thanks, some save all their wages just to prepare you a meal. When given a plate from a host or leader be considerate & appreciate the blessing!

Mission Mindful Eating 

Usually, time away from our regular routine gives us an excuse to “party.” On my past two missions, I’ve seen people carry loads of junk food in a suitcase. Sure, it’s all fun for a while but then eventually consuming a ton of sugar & chemicals can leave you feeling sluggish or worse cause you to get ill. 

These trips are not luxury vacations, missionary work requires pushing the body past its usual comfort zones of western living. When I was in Nicaragua the days were long & HOT which was a huge adjustment physically. It brought to my attention that I may need to alter which treats I pack to get the essential nutrition while away from home. 

I am not a nutritionist, but by being aware of my preexisting condition (hypothyroidism) & doing some product research, I’ve collected a few items that I feel confident in to help me stay healthy while serving the two months in El Salvador.
